Manjrekar and Jadeja: A History Revisited
Sanjay Manjrekar, the former India cricketer and current commentator, recently stirred up memories of a past controversy by posting a picture with a Ravindra Jadeja Team India jersey on Instagram. The image, showcasing Jadeja's iconic number 8, has ignited discussions among fans and prompted reflections on their well-documented 2019 disagreement.
The Context: A 2019 Feud
Prior to the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Manjrekar publicly criticized Jadeja, labeling him a 'bits and pieces' player, implying he lacked the all-round contribution expected of a top cricketer. This comment drew immediate and substantial backlash. Manjrekar's statement questioned Jadeja's value in the ODI format, suggesting a preference for specialists in both batting and bowling.
“I am not a big fan of bits-and-pieces players, which Jadeja is at this point of his career in 50-over cricket. In Test matches, he is a pure bowler. But in 50-over cricket, I would rather have a batsman and a spinner,' Manjrekar stated during a live TV broadcast.
Jadeja responded swiftly and pointedly on X (formerly Twitter), questioning Manjrekar's credentials and experience.
“Still have played twice the number of matches you have played and i m still playing. Learn to respect ppl who have achieved.i have heard enough of your verbal diarrhoea.@sanjaymanjrekar,” Jadeja wrote.
A Reconciled Stance and Its Aftermath
Following Jadeja's exceptional all-round performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, Manjrekar publicly acknowledged his error in judgment.
“Bits and pieces he just ripped me apart today. By bits and pieces of sheer brilliance just proved me wrong on all fronts. But this Ravindra Jadeja we have not seen very often,” Manjrekar admitted.
The initial criticism and subsequent retraction had ramifications for Manjrekar’s commentary career. He was temporarily banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from participating in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He later sought reinstatement and returned to commentary in the following season.
Current Status
- Manjrekar is currently part of the commentary panel for the ongoing IPL 2025.
- Jadeja is representing Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, where he has scored 74 runs and taken one wicket in three matches.
- CSK is scheduled to face Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 5, in Chennai.
This recent Instagram post, though seemingly innocuous, has inevitably resurrected the memory of the 2019 controversy, sparking renewed discussions about the dynamic between players and pundits in the world of cricket.
